UK, England, Isle of Sheppey: UK Power Networks is investing over $3 M (£2.6 M) in Sheerness on the Isle of Sheppey to strengthen and future-proof local electricity supplies.
The work at Sheerness Primary Substation will connect a new customer to the network while also increasing capacity and improving supplies for more than 6,100 homes and businesses in the area.
As part of the project, a third transformer is being added to the substation, raising capacity to 32 MW. Once in service, the transformer will take electricity at 33,000 V and step it down to 6,600 V for local distribution.
The new transformer, which weighs 29 t, was recently delivered and placed onto a specially-built bund using a 110-t crane.
Engineers have also rebuilt a former storage building at the site to create a new switchroom. The facility will contain modern switchgear used to safely manage and distribute electricity, while new underground cables will link it into the network.
Kaja Kacperska, project manager at UK Power Networks, said the investment would provide long-term benefits by increasing capacity, supporting reliable power supplies and helping the move towards low carbon technologies.
Steve Quinn, project manager at Manders Building Contractors, described the transformer delivery as a key stage of the scheme and said the team was proud to support a project that will benefit the wider community.
GEODIS supported the transformer delivery and installation, handling transport, heavy-lift equipment, inspections and on-site coordination.
