South Africa: Siemens South Africa has announced the localisation of its 8DA gas-insulated medium voltage switchgear production for the South African market, in partnership with Private National Grid (PNG).
The move is intended to strengthen local energy infrastructure, improve supply chain resilience, reduce lead times and increase local content in critical grid equipment.
PNG is a South African electrical engineering company specialising in high-voltage engineering, substation automation and control plant design. As a technical services provider, value-added reseller and specialist contractor for Siemens South Africa, PNG supports Independent Power Producer projects and other energy infrastructure developments.
The Siemens 8DA is a compact, factory-assembled and type-tested switchgear system for primary power distribution up to 40.5 kV. It is designed for reliability, safety and low maintenance, with applications in utilities, industry and infrastructure.
According to Siemens, local production will help expand domestic manufacturing capacity, support skills development and technology transfer, and contribute to job creation in the energy sector.
South Africa’s power system is changing, with more private-sector participation and increasing renewable energy integration. This requires modern and reliable grid infrastructure. The 8DA supports this need through its compact gas-insulated design, hermetically sealed components, high operational safety and service life of up to 35 years.
