Germany: Skyborn has reached a cooperation agreement with German transmission operator 50Hertz to construct and operate two offshore substation platforms for the Gennaker wind farm in the Baltic Sea. The platforms, named OSS Zingst and OSS Darß, are currently being built at shipyards in the Netherlands.
Together, the substations will enable a combined grid connection capacity of up to 927 MW, supporting 63 offshore wind turbines of 15 MW each, located off the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula. The wind farm received full approval from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in December 2025, and turbine installation is expected to start in late summer 2027.
The agreement outlines the construction, installation, and maintenance responsibilities for the two platforms, forming a key part of the planned grid connection system, which 50Hertz anticipates commissioning in July 2028.
Patrick Lammers, Skyborn CEO, described the deal as an important step for delivering the Gennaker project. He said the partnership provides a framework for connecting offshore wind projects in territorial waters while addressing complex regulatory and technical requirements.
50Hertz highlighted that the cooperation is essential for Germany’s energy transition, ensuring secure and reliable integration of offshore wind into the national grid. The project demonstrates how coordinated efforts between operators and developers can accelerate offshore renewable energy deployment while maintaining long-term energy security.
The Gennaker project forms part of a broader push in Germany to expand offshore wind capacity and strengthen cross-border energy infrastructure, with the two substations serving as a central link between the turbines and the mainland grid.
