GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GVH) has entered into a Main Services Agreement (MSA) with the Swedish engineering firm AFRY to support the deployment of the BWRX-300 Small Modular Reactor. The collaboration is designed to foster a European industrial ecosystem, moving beyond core reactor technology to include regional engineering and project management support.
For power systems engineers, this partnership signifies a shift towards modular, distributed baseload power. The BWRX-300 is currently under construction at Ontario Power Generation’s Darlington site in Canada, with this new agreement specifically targeting the Swedish market and wider European energy transition. The focus will be on ensuring the technology can be integrated into existing grid infrastructures while meeting stringent European safety and technical standards. This move underscores the growing role of SMRs as a “grid-friendly” nuclear option compared to large-scale traditional plants.
