USA, Missouri, St. Louis: Ameren Missouri has completed a new substation in St. Louis, aimed at improving power reliability for around 8,000 customers and supporting recovery efforts following the 16 May 2025 tornado.
The project is part of the company’s wider Smart Energy Plan, a long-term programme focused on modernising infrastructure, strengthening the grid against severe weather, and improving overall system reliability. The new facility is also intended to support future energy demand in the area.
According to Landy Wince, the Senior Director of Division Operations at Ameren Missouri, the investment goes beyond routine upgrades and is linked to long-term growth and stability in St. Louis.
The substation will help ease pressure on two nearby facilities, reducing the risk of outages caused by overloaded equipment. It also includes smart technology designed to detect faults quickly and restore power more efficiently, especially during emergencies.
Additional storm-hardening features have been added to improve resilience and speed up recovery if severe weather strikes again. The project also supports local industry, using Missouri-made components, including a transformer produced in Washington by WEG Transformers USA.
The upgraded infrastructure is expected to support new developments such as Delmar DivINe and assist in powering the electric bus fleet at the Metro Transit DeBaliviere bus garage operated by Metro Transit.
Overall, the project is presented as part of wider efforts to strengthen resilience, support recovery, and prepare the city’s energy system for future needs.
