USA, New York, Montauk: The offshore substation (OSS) for Ørsted’s Sunrise Wind project was installed in by Saipem’s heavy-lift vessel Saipem 7000. The structure is now in the commissioning phase, marking a major milestone for the development.

Located about 48 km (30 mi) east of Montauk, Sunrise Wind will feature 84 Siemens Gamesa 11 MW wind turbines. It is the first offshore wind project in the US to use a HVDC transmission system, supplied by Siemens Energy and Aker Solutions, under a contract signed in 2021.

The HVDC technology will deliver the project’s output to the Holbrook substation in Brookhaven, Suffolk County, supporting grid reliability and the integration of renewable energy in New York.

Ørsted is building Sunrise Wind independently after previously partnering with Eversource. Earlier this year, the developer launched a rights issue to secure capital for construction, with most proceeds earmarked for the project.

The substation installation follows progress at Ørsted’s other Northeast Program site, Revolution Wind, where turbine installation resumed after a US court ruling lifted a federal stop-work order.

Once completed, Sunrise Wind is expected to provide clean electricity to more than 600,000 homes, contributing significantly to New York State’s renewable energy targets.
