Germany: Sunotec has reached an important milestone in building the Hybrid Power Plant Zerbst, which it says will become Germany’s largest solar and battery hybrid facility under the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG).

The project is located on a 41-ha former gravel pit and brings together 73,000 solar panels with a total capacity of 46.4 MWp, alongside a 57 MWh battery energy storage system. Sunotec explained that the site is designed as a fully co-located hybrid asset, able to deliver grid-supporting and dispatchable renewable electricity.

The Zerbst project is being developed by Statkraft and is expected to produce around 50,000 MWh of renewable power each year. This is enough to supply electricity to about 14,000 households.

For Sunotec, the project is especially significant as it represents the company’s first hybrid power plant in Germany. It also serves as a proof of concept for Sunotec’s fully integrated, beyond-EPC delivery model. Unlike a traditional EPC contract, Sunotec handled key stages of the project internally, including engineering, geotechnical work and environmental planning.

Once construction is complete, Sunotec will remain responsible for operating and maintaining the solar plant.

According to the company, this integrated approach reduces complexity, cuts down on interfaces and helps ensure high-quality delivery. Zharin Atanasov-Lankes, Managing Director of Sunotec Germany, said the Zerbst plant shows the strength of Sunotec’s model and its ability to deliver large and complex systems.

He added that the project highlights the engineering expertise and execution skills of the company’s teams. Over the past six months, Sunotec has also made strong progress across Europe, including agreements with Shell on battery storage in Central and Eastern Europe and with Sungrow to install 2.4 GWh of battery systems.
