India, Tamil Nadu: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has ordered the construction of 231 new substations as part of a wider effort to strengthen the state’s power infrastructure and support uninterrupted electricity supply.
The decision was announced during a high-level review meeting of the energy department at the Secretariat. The meeting covered power generation, demand, distribution and grid strengthening measures involving Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited and its subsidiary companies.
According to an official release, Tamil Nadu has sufficient power generation and procurement, with no electricity shortage reported in the state. However, some temporary distribution-level outages have been recorded in urban areas, including Chennai.
These local power disruptions have been linked to ageing equipment, underground cable faults, rising electricity consumption, maintenance work and accidental cable damage caused during road-cutting activities by civic agencies.
Alongside the new substations, the chief minister directed the immediate recruitment of 15,058 power workers to help address electricity glitches and improve response times. He also called for more intensive patrolling by technical staff to help prevent outages.
To speed up development work and improve public grievance handling, the government has also deployed 77 new Fuse-Off Call centres, seven additional breakdown repair teams, 125 repair vehicles, 10 high-level monitoring committees and two underground cable fault detection teams.
The measures are intended to strengthen local distribution systems, improve service reliability and support faster restoration of supply when faults occur.
