USA, Texas: Severe storms have torn through west Texas, producing what a meteorologist described as a rare mix of multiple tornadoes, hurricane-force winds and softball-sized hail. The extreme weather killed at least four people, injured nine, and caused widespread damage around the town of Matador, a meteorologist said on 14 May.

One of the tornadoes destroyed a power substation in the area, which led to widespread electricity outages across the region.

A post from AEP Texas on social media said the damage has resulted in scattered power cuts stretching from Matador to Abilene. Around 3,900 customers were without electricity near Abilene, while a further 1,600 households were affected near Hamlin.

Utility crews were working to restore power as quickly as possible while assessing the extent of the damage.
