Iraq, Erbil: The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has signed a $76.4 M (100 B Iraqi dinar) contract to build three new 132 kV power substations in Erbil, as part of efforts to expand electricity infrastructure and deliver continuous power supply.

The agreement was signed by Electricity Minister Kamal Mohammed Salih with HERO Company. The substations will be developed in Shamamak, Hasarok, and Timar, with completion expected within two years and full government backing to ensure delivery on schedule.

According to the ministry, the projects will help ease pressure on the electricity network, especially in high-demand areas, while improving overall grid performance. Officials stressed the importance of meeting deadlines and maintaining strong technical standards.

Ari Zarari said the company is committed to delivering the projects to a high standard, highlighting their importance for public services as well as the industrial and agricultural sectors.

The substations form part of the KRG’s flagship Runaki programme, launched under the ninth cabinet to provide 24-hour electricity across the region by the end of 2026. Currently, more than 85 % of the population, which is around 5.5 million people, already has access to continuous power.

The wider plan includes expanding transmission networks, upgrading substations, and reducing reliance on private generators. Authorities say improved electricity supply is supporting economic growth, boosting industry, agriculture, and private investment.

The new substations are expected to play a key role in stabilising supply in fast-growing urban areas such as Erbil.
