Moldova / Romania: The US Government has approved a $130 M project to construct a high-voltage transmission line between Moldova and Romania, strengthening Moldova’s energy security and supporting its integration into the European power grid.
The planned Strășeni–Gutinaș 400 kV line was chosen after a comprehensive study by the United States Energy Association (USEA), which identified the route as the most viable option based on technical and economic analysis.
Mark W. Menezes, President and CEO of USEA, said: “The US Government’s approval of this critical investment represents a strong commitment to Moldova’s energy future and its continued integration with European energy markets.”
The new connection is expected to cut Moldova’s reliance on electricity imports from Russian-owned power plants by enabling access to European markets. Officials also note it will strengthen grid stability and encourage regional cooperation in electricity trade.
Sergiu Carmanschi, interim general director of Moldelectrica, Moldova’s transmission system operator, highlighted the importance of the decision: “Our joint efforts, guided by USEA’s expertise and insights, have laid the foundation for a more reliable and integrated energy grid.”
The transmission line project represents a milestone in Moldova’s broader energy transition, reducing vulnerability to external suppliers while advancing integration with European energy systems.
