USA, New York, Mayville: A lineman has died after suffering serious injuries while carrying out electrical repair work at the Lakeview Avenue substation in Mayville during a scheduled power outage.

Stephen P. Lockett was injured in the early morning of 11 September 2026 while working at the substation. Sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene, administered CPR and used an automated external defibrillator before emergency medical services transported him to hospital.

Lockett died on 15 September at Erie County Medical Center.

The repair work followed an incident on 2 September in which several mini-transformers failed at the substation, causing a small fire and an outage lasting around 90 minutes for some residents.

On 8 September, the Mayville Village Board declared a State of Emergency to help accelerate repairs. A villagewide outage was then scheduled from midnight on 11 September to allow work at the substation.

Mayor Rick Syper said the incident involved a subcontracting company working on the facility.

An investigation into the circumstances of Lockett’s death is ongoing.
