Austria, Sulz: BAUR GmbH has introduced a new version of its shirla portable device for cable and cable sheath testing, fault pre-location and pin-pointing.
The updated device replaces the previous rotary knob operation with a large colour touchscreen. Adjustable lighting, together with day and night modes, is designed to make the display easier to read in different working conditions.
The new BAUR flow UI software guides users through preselected operating steps, with contextual information available when needed. According to the company, this makes the device easier to use, even for less experienced employees. The results of the test cycles or cable fault location can be displayed on the touchscreen as traces or a report. shirla automatically saves the reports and allows them to be exported to a USB drive.
The main technical functions remain unchanged. shirla supports cable and sheath testing with DC voltages up to 10 kV, while fault pre-location is based on the Murray and Glaser measuring bridge principle.
For pin-pointing earth-contact faults, the device generates a pulsed voltage and can be used with the BAUR protrac pin-pointing system for the step voltage method.
The new version also adds technical improvements, including output current limitation for sheath testing and fault pre-location. This allows users to set an upper current limit and reduce the risk of accidental cable damage.
For pin-pointing, users can now select from five pulse patterns, which may help when working in environments with high levels of interference.
