China: CHINT Electric’s NG7-38(Z) metal-enclosed gas-insulated switchgear has received ETL certification from Intertek for the North American market. According to the company, it is the first medium-voltage switchgear developed in China to obtain the certification.
The equipment was tested for insulation performance, mechanical endurance, electrical safety and pressure withstand capability under applicable US and Canadian requirements. ETL is a recognised product safety certification used in both markets, and certified manufacturers remain subject to regular factory inspections.
The NG7-38(Z) series uses low-pressure SF₆ as its insulating medium, with circuit breakers, disconnectors and other main components enclosed in a stainless-steel tank. It is designed for operation in demanding environments, including areas with high altitude, humidity and coastal salt exposure.
CHINT said the certification will allow the company to expand the product’s use in North American renewable energy, data-centre and industrial power applications. The switchgear is manufactured as part of the company’s wider medium-voltage portfolio for international markets.
The certification comes as North American utilities and industrial operators invest in grid upgrades and additional electrical infrastructure. However, the product’s continued use of SF₆ distinguishes it from the growing range of SF₆-free medium-voltage switchgear being developed in response to environmental regulations and decarbonisation targets.
