USA, Michigan, Grayling: Consumers Energy has officially launched construction of the new Skyline Substation in Grayling, Michigan, marking a major step toward improved electricity reliability for local homes and businesses.

Part of the company’s ongoing Reliability Roadmap initiative, the substation is designed to reduce both the frequency and duration of power outages across the area. It replaces an older facility and is being built closer to Grayling’s residential and commercial zones.

“This investment represents our commitment to delivering a smarter, more resilient grid,” said Greg Salisbury, senior vice president of electric distribution at Consumers Energy. “The Skyline Substation and related upgrades will strengthen service reliability for the growing Grayling community.”

Beyond the substation itself, the project includes extensive line clearing and enhancements to several miles of local power lines. These upgrades will help modernise grid infrastructure and minimise outage risks.

In addition to improving grid performance, the new substation is expected to support regional economic development. One key beneficiary is the upcoming Saab manufacturing plant, scheduled to open in 2026, which will rely on enhanced power supply for operations.

Salisbury added, “Our investments in Grayling highlight the connection between economic growth and a reliable, affordable energy supply that benefits all of our customers.”

The Skyline Substation is projected to be fully operational by the end of 2025.
