UK: Stonesthro, a UK-based edge cloud specialist, has partnered with Cornerstone, a mobile infrastructure services provider, to successfully deliver a landmark proof of concept (POC) in micro-edge computing.
By installing high-performance data centre technology directly within challenging outdoor infrastructure environments, the project demonstrates how the future of the UK’s digital economy can be decentralised. Trials carried out in Southampton, Solihull, and Milton Keynes confirmed that distributed systems can achieve sub-10ms latency, which is critical for IoT use cases such as drones and autonomous vehicles. It also lowers the carbon impact of AI and data processing.
The collaboration brings together Stonesthro’s expertise in edge cloud solutions and tailored hardware/software systems with Cornerstone’s nationwide infrastructure network of 16,000 sites. This allows capabilities typically limited to large, centralised data centres, such as power, cooling, and security, to be delivered locally.
The POC was tested by UK SMEs including Fabstir, Motion Dynamics, and Lupovis. Results highlighted rapid deployment, with one solution going live in under a week, strong performance in handling AI-GPU workloads, and robust capacity supported by partners such as Cisco, Zadara, ZaveIT, Fortinet, and Neos.
The project also addresses energy challenges by reducing the need for long-distance power transmission, cutting waste and avoiding additional infrastructure. Following its success, the partners plan to expand to 10–20 sites, with a long-term vision of scaling to 1,000 locations nationwide.
