China: Hitachi Energy has reached a major milestone in high-voltage technology with the completion of the first 550 kV gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) in China using its EconiQ® SF₆-free technology.

On 16 January, the company successfully finalised both manufacturing and routine testing of this pioneering GIS for the State Grid Corporation of China, setting a new industry benchmark for high-voltage applications.

The EconiQ® solution demonstrates that high-voltage networks can operate efficiently without SF₆, a potent greenhouse gas traditionally used in GIS. This achievement marks an important step towards large-scale, high-voltage operations that support cleaner, low-carbon electricity transmission across Central China.

By eliminating SF₆, the technology reduces environmental impact while maintaining the reliability and performance expected of ultra-high-voltage systems. Hitachi Energy’s milestone highlights the company’s commitment to sustainable innovation in the power sector.
