Switzerland, Zürich: Hitachi Energy has expanded its portfolio of clean energy solutions with the launch of HyFlex Compact, a hybrid power system designed to provide reliable electricity in locations where grid access is limited or unavailable.
The portable unit combines hydrogen fuel cells, high-performance battery storage, power electronics and an integrated control system within a single enclosure. Designed for both standalone and grid-connected operation, the system offers an emissions-free alternative to conventional diesel generators used on construction sites, temporary infrastructure projects and remote industrial facilities.
HyFlex Compact can also function as a mobile microgrid through optional AC and DC input modules, allowing operators to connect additional energy sources and optimise system performance while reducing hydrogen consumption.
According to Hitachi Energy, growing electricity demand, coupled with decarbonisation targets and grid constraints, is driving the need for more flexible and resilient power solutions. The company says the new platform draws on lessons learned from earlier HyFlex pilot projects, which explored hydrogen-to-power applications in real-world environments.
Potential applications include construction projects, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, mining operations, critical infrastructure and other hard-to-abate sectors seeking lower-emission power alternatives.
The launch forms part of Hitachi Energy’s broader strategy to strengthen its capabilities in power electronics and system integration, supported by recent investments in dedicated testing and development facilities in Sweden and the United States.
