India, Gujarat, Halol: RIR Power Electronics Ltd has developed a 25 kV, 120 kA capacitor discharge, vertically integrated semiconductor switch, marking a notable step forward in India’s high-power electronics capabilities.
The company states that the development represents India’s first indigenously built 25 kV high-voltage thyristor switch designed for advanced pulse power applications. The innovation supports national initiatives such as “Make in India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat” by strengthening domestic manufacturing and reducing reliance on imports.
At the core of the system is a 125 mm silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR), developed in India with a voltage blocking capability of up to 8 kV. Multiple SCRs are connected in series to achieve the required high-voltage performance, enabling controlled delivery of extremely high current pulses.
The switch has been tested and qualified at RIR Power’s high-voltage laboratory at its Halol, Gujarat facility, demonstrating reliable operation under demanding conditions.
Designed for high-energy pulse power systems, the technology is suited for applications in defence, advanced medical equipment, and precision-directed energy systems.
Dr. Harshad Mehta, Non-Executive Chairman of RIR Power Electronics Ltd, said the milestone reflects decades of semiconductor expertise and reinforces the company’s commitment to strengthening supply chain resilience and advancing India’s self-reliance in critical technologies.
