Germany, Munich: Infineon Technologies and Siemens are working together on semiconductor-based circuit breaker technology for power-critical applications.
As part of the cooperation, Infineon will supply silicon carbide power modules for Siemens’ SENTRON 3QD2 semiconductor, or solid-state, circuit breakers. The devices are intended for use in applications such as data centres, production facilities and battery storage systems.
Unlike traditional electromechanical circuit breakers, which use mechanical parts to interrupt current flow, the Siemens SENTRON 3QD2 uses semiconductor components and smart protection algorithms. According to the companies, this allows current interruption in the microsecond range, up to 1,000 times faster than conventional systems.
The technology is aimed at direct current grids and applications where fast protection is important for system availability. In environments such as industrial manufacturing and AI data centres, electrical failures can lead to downtime, data loss or equipment damage.
The collaboration uses Infineon’s 62mm CoolSiC MOSFET module 1200 V within Siemens’ protection concept. The companies say the approach supports more efficient and resilient power infrastructure, especially as DC grids and highly electrified systems become more common.
Siemens noted that DC applications can reduce energy consumption and material use, while batteries can help reduce peak power demand.
