India. Maharashtra: Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has rolled out a state-wide substation monitoring system (SMS) to strengthen power reliability and improve customer service across Maharashtra. The new platform provides live digital surveillance of substations, helping officials spot and fix issues quickly before they impact supply.

The technology, dubbed the “digital eye” on substations, was announced during the AB Kottewar Memorial Lecture by MSEDCL director (operations/projects) Sachin Talewar. He said the system will make the distribution network more transparent, efficient and consumer-friendly.

Developed locally at low cost, the SMS enables staff in the central control room to monitor electricity flow, voltage levels and equipment status in real time from substations throughout the state. With continuous data, teams can pinpoint where faults occur and respond faster, helping to shorten outage time and keep power flowing more reliably.

The monitoring system will also send SMS alerts to consumers on their registered mobile numbers if faults are detected at the feeder level, allowing people to be informed promptly about issues affecting their supply.

Another key benefit of the new system is its alignment with the ongoing solarisation of agricultural feeders. With thousands of these feeders being equipped with solar power, real-time visibility will help ensure stable daytime supply where it matters most.

By bringing real-time data into everyday operations, MSEDCL aims to modernise its grid management and deliver a more responsive electricity service to consumers across the region.
