India, New Delhi: NTPC Limited has received a patent from the Government of India for a smart access system designed to improve safety in electrical switchgear maintenance.

The patent, titled “A Method and a System for Accessing Electrical Breaker Modules,” was granted on 15 June 2026 under Patent No. 592308.

The technology introduces a smart access control system for electrical breakers in switchgear installations. It can be integrated with SAP and Permit-to-Work systems, creating a digital safety framework for electrical maintenance activities.

The system was developed by NTPC engineers Sandeep Kumar, DGM, CC Solar; Gnyanankur Sonowal, DGM, EMD, NTPC Bongaigaon; and Ashutosh Kumar, Senior Manager, Operation, Farakka.

According to NTPC, the system uses multi-factor authentication and digital interlocking to ensure that only authorised personnel can access specific breaker modules. It is designed to prevent operational duplication, enforce protection interlocks and reduce the risk of isolating the wrong electrical equipment during maintenance.

By using digital controls and data-driven processes, the invention aims to minimise human error, strengthen compliance with maintenance protocols and improve operational safety in power plant environments.

NTPC said the patent reflects its focus on innovation, workplace safety and digital transformation. The company added that the technology supports safer and more reliable power plant operations.
