Denmark: A major milestone has been reached at Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm, as the substation and jacket foundation were successfully installed at the 1 GW Thor site in the Danish North Sea.
The 2,600-t topside, measuring 39 m in length and 18 m in height, was transported from HSM Offshore Energy’s Schiedam yard in the Netherlands. The installation was completed offshore using the heavy-lift vessel Gulliver from Scaldis SMC. The jacket, which supports the structure, weighs 2,500 t.
HSM Offshore Energy secured the EPCIC contract for the substation from RWE in 2022, delivering engineering, procurement, construction, installation, and commissioning of both the topside and jacket.
The substation will act as the energy collection and transformation hub, connecting Siemens Gamesa SG 14-236 DD turbines to the Danish grid. Energinet, the national TSO, recently finalised onshore grid connection works.
So far, 36 of the 72 monopiles have been installed, with full commissioning of the wind farm expected in 2027. Thor is jointly owned by RWE (51 %) and Norges Bank Investment Management (49 %).
