Hitachi Energy has secured the lead for the Yanbu-NIC HVDC interconnection, a critical infrastructure project for Saudi Arabia’s NEOM development. The project features the HVDC Light® technology, rated at ±525 kV. This is one of the world’s first systems to achieve a 3 GW capacity at this voltage level.
The link spans over 650 kilometres, connecting the industrial hub of Oxagon with the Yanbu area. Technically, the system utilizes two converter stations in a bipole configuration, each consisting of two asymmetrical monopoles. These stations interface with the existing 380 kV AC grids. This project is a benchmark for high-voltage DC engineering, designed to facilitate the transition to a 100% renewable energy grid for the region.
