South Africa, Northern Cape: The National Transmission Company South Africa (NTCSA) has completed and handed over the Aquila Main Transmission Substation, strengthening grid infrastructure in one of the country’s key renewable energy regions.
The 400/132 kV substation has an initial transformation capacity of 500 MVA and has been designed for future expansion to approximately 2 GVA.
The project will support the connection of additional generation capacity to the national grid and forms part of NTCSA’s wider transmission expansion programme.
Located in the Northern Cape, Aquila is expected to provide additional capacity for renewable energy projects while strengthening regional electricity supply and supporting future demand growth.
The province has some of South Africa’s strongest renewable energy resources, making transmission availability critical to connecting new generation projects.
NTCSA said the completion of Aquila reflects cooperation between the transmission company, government, independent power producers and industry partners as South Africa continues to expand and reinforce its electricity network.
