India, Andhra Pradesh: Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar told the Legislative Assembly on Thursday, 5 March 2026, that the Andhra Pradesh government is investing around $655 M (₹6,000 crore) in the construction of substations to strengthen the state’s power distribution network.
Replying to MLA Aditi Vijayalakshmi Gajapathiraju on the proposed 220 / 132 kV substation at Venugopalapuram in Vizianagaram district, the Minister said the project is currently under re-tendering. Efforts are being made to expedite construction, with completion expected by March 2027. In Vizianagaram, two 220 kV projects worth about $5 M (₹46 crore) are already under implementation.
Speaking more broadly, Ravi Kumar said that 33/ 11 kV substations are being sanctioned in areas with high electricity loads, and 200 substations are currently under construction across the state to meet future power demand.
On the topic of underground cabling in Vizianagaram town, the Minister noted that such a system would involve significant expenditure, and its feasibility would be assessed based on necessity and available funds.
He also highlighted the growing number of industrial, commercial, domestic, and agricultural electricity consumers, stressing that the government remains committed to expanding and strengthening power infrastructure. The new substations will ensure a reliable electricity supply for the state in the coming years.
