Azerbaijan, Baku: AzerEnerji has commissioned the 220/110/10 kV Yeni Sangachal substation, a key part of plans to connect BP’s Sangachal terminal to Azerbaijan’s national electricity grid. The facility was inaugurated during a ceremony attended by President Ilham Aliyev.
The substation is connected to the national grid through four new 220 kV transmission lines spanning 111 km. Electricity can be supplied from three independent sources: the 785 MW Janub Power Plant, the 385 MW Gobu Power Plant and the 500 kV Absheron substation.
Equipped with digital control systems integrated into the SCADA network, the facility also includes a dedicated grid control centre. Five 110 kV overhead and cable lines, covering 25 km, have been installed between the substation and the Sangachal terminal, with two more planned.
The project will supply 80 MW to BP’s Sangachal terminal and 85 MW to the Shah Deniz Compressor Station. Together, the two facilities consume more than one billion kWh of electricity annually.
Yeni Sangachal will also support the connection of the 240 MW Shafag solar power plant, currently under construction, to the national grid. Electricity from the plant will supply the terminal and allow its gas-fired power plant to be decommissioned.
The substation forms part of the $230 M Sangachal Terminal Electrification project, which BP expects to complete by the end of 2028. Together with the Shafag project, it is expected to reduce the terminal’s operational emissions by around 50% over its future lifetime.
