Germany, Berlin: GE Vernova has been awarded two contracts by Stromnetz Berlin for the design, delivery and installation of two new 110 kV gas-insulated substations in Wittenau and Neukölln.

The substations will form part of Berlin’s high-voltage electricity network, supporting power supply to local substations that serve homes, businesses and public infrastructure across the city.

Both grid nodes will use GE Vernova’s SF₆-free g³ technology, part of the company’s GRiDEA portfolio. The technology is designed as an alternative to SF₆, a greenhouse gas widely used in high-voltage electrical equipment for insulation and arc prevention.

According to GE Vernova, the g³ insulating medium can reduce global warming potential by around 99% compared with SF₆, while maintaining the compact design and performance required for urban high-voltage networks.

Stromnetz Berlin operates one of Europe’s largest urban gas-insulated switchgear networks. The company said the Wittenau and Neukölln projects will support Berlin’s security of supply and climate goals while modernising essential grid infrastructure.

Compact and reliable high-voltage substations are increasingly important in dense cities, where available space is limited and electricity demand is rising due to the electrification of transport, heating, buildings and industry.

The Wittenau project is expected to run from June 2026 to March 2031, while the Neukölln project is scheduled from June 2026 to January 2032. Financial details were not disclosed.
