Brazil, São Paulo: Iberdrola’s subsidiary, Neoenergia, has successfully energised a massive transmission line project, marking a significant milestone in the company’s Brazilian operations. The completion of the final section of the Alto Paranaíba Transmission Project boosts the company’s standing as one of Brazil’s largest electricity delivery initiatives.
Spanning 1,600 km (994 mi), the transmission line comprises 3,250 towers and features six substations along its route. The infrastructure project will significantly enhance the power transmission capacity between the northern region of Minas Gerais and São Paulo, the most populous city in Brazil, with over 20 million residents in its metropolitan area.
Awarded in a 2022 auction by Brazil’s National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL), the project was completed 15 months ahead of schedule, requiring an investment of approximately $783 M. This marks a major achievement for Neoenergia, which successfully navigated the complexities of such a large-scale infrastructure project.
Brazil’s electricity generation is largely powered by renewable sources, with hydropower contributing more than half of the country’s energy needs. The nation is also expanding its renewable portfolio with increasing investments in wind and solar power.
While Brazil has only two nuclear reactors contributing around 2 % of its electricity, the country continues to expand its natural gas-fired capacity, alongside ongoing projects like this transmission line to further strengthen its energy infrastructure.
