India, Delhi: The Delhi government has launched the capital’s first 2×1,000 kVA smart pad-mounted substation in Gandhi Nagar, alongside a rooftop solar initiative aimed at strengthening the city’s power infrastructure.
The smart substation has been installed at Amar Mohalla, an area with dense commercial activity, narrow lanes and limited space for conventional power infrastructure.
Developed by BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL) at an investment of around Rs 1.60 crore, the installation consists of two 1,000 kVA pad-mounted substations. The project has added around 380 kVA of additional capacity and is expected to improve electricity supply for nearly 1,400 consumers in and around Amar Mohalla.
According to the government, the installation occupies almost 80% less space than a conventional substation. Each unit integrates the transformer, ring main unit and low-voltage panel into a sealed, factory-assembled structure, reducing on-site construction requirements.
The compact design is expected to improve operational safety, maintenance and fault management, making it suitable for dense urban areas where conventional substations are difficult to install.
The government also launched Solarise East, a community initiative to increase rooftop solar adoption under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana and the Delhi Solar Policy.
