Europe: January 2026 marks a defining regulatory shift for Europe’s medium-voltage networks. The European Union has officially prohibited the use of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) in new switchgear installations up to 24 kV. While SF6 has been the industry standard for over 50 years due to its compact nature and arc-quenching capabilities, the transition to alternatives with lower global warming potential is now a legal and operational necessity.
This change arrives as utilities face immense pressure. According to the European Commission, electricity demand could surge by 60 % by 2030, yet nearly 40 % of existing distribution lines are over 40 years old. Modernising this aging infrastructure is critical for grid stability. The challenge for the industry is not merely replacing a gas; it is a strategic requirement to ensure supply chain readiness and lifecycle support for new technologies.
The success of this transition relies on long-term collaboration. For example, ABB and Enedis began co-developing SF6-free solutions in France as early as 2017, proving that these technologies are scalable and mature. Such partnerships are essential as the grid becomes more decentralised and digitalised.
Ultimately, the phase-out of SF6 is about more than environmental compliance. It serves as a foundation for building a more adaptable and resilient power system. The decisions made by utilities today to align with new standards and strengthen value chain partnerships will determine how effectively Europe’s networks can withstand the future energy landscape’s demands.
