Google has joined forces with Tesla, data centre developer Verrus, and several energy and HVAC companies to promote more efficient use of existing electricity networks. The group, called Utilize, aims to advance “smarter, faster, and more affordable use of existing grid infrastructure”.

Members also include Carrier, Sparkfund, Renew Home, and Span. Together, they argue that the current grid is often underused. According to Ian Magruder, Executive Director of Utilize, power systems have traditionally been designed to meet peak demand, even though much of the capacity remains unused for most of the year. He notes that this unused capacity represents a significant opportunity for improvement.

Utilize points to research suggesting that, at times, the US grid may operate at as little as 18 % of its potential, while more than 200 GW of power can be lost due to inefficiencies. The group believes that technologies such as large-scale batteries, solar generation, virtual power plants, and advanced grid management can help unlock this hidden capacity.

Each participating company stands to benefit from such changes. Tesla would gain from increased deployment of batteries and solar systems, while Google could benefit from improved grid access and lower electricity costs for its data centres. At the same time, the initiative highlights broader industry needs to improve efficiency, reduce emissions, and better utilise existing infrastructure.

Utilize plans to work with states, policymakers, utilities, and other stakeholders to turn research into practical actions. However, it remains unclear whether the group has formally registered as a lobbying organisation.
