USA, Pennsylvania, Levittown: Residents of Levittown got an unusual aerial show on 31 March as PECO crews carried out work on overhead transmission lines. Contractors used helicopters to access high-voltage lines stretching from the PECO substation on Edgely Road in Bristol Township to Levittown Lake in Tullytown Borough.
An MD 500 helicopter operated by High Voltage Aviation shuttled workers and equipment to the transmission lines, at times flying less than 75 m (250 ft) above the ground. A small staging area in the Levittown Lake parking lot supported the operation, allowing the helicopter to land and pick up supplies.
Later in the afternoon, a second helicopter, an Aérospatiale AS355F2 Écureuil 2 owned by JBD Enterprises Inc., joined the work, performing additional flights along the utility lines.
“Helicopters are being used to assist with maintenance on overhead transmission lines in the Levittown area,” said Matt Rankin, a PECO spokesperson. “The work is expected to be completed tomorrow.”
The low-flying aircraft attracted attention both on the ground and on social media, where residents shared photos and videos. While it is not unusual for helicopters to perform utility or rail inspections in the area, residents often do not receive advance notice of the flights.
Earlier on Sunday, the Aérospatiale AS355F2 was observed flying at low altitudes over parts of Bensalem Township and Middletown Township, drawing similar attention from the community.
