Japan, Matsuyama: Japan’s first grid-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) supplied by Hitachi is now in operation in Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture.

The Matsuyama Battery Energy Storage System, developed for Matsuyama Mikan Energy LLC, has a rated output of 12 MW and a capacity of 35.8 MWh. Commissioned on 1 August 2025, it stores electricity during high-generation periods and releases it during peak demand, helping balance the grid and integrate more renewable power.

The system incorporates Hitachi Energy’s power conversion platform, which manages supply quality and adjusts output to match fluctuations in renewable generation. It stabilises voltage, provides balancing power, and ensures efficient charge and discharge cycles.

Delivered under a “One Hitachi” approach, the project saw the group manage all stages from design and procurement to installation and testing. Hitachi Power Solutions supplied and commissioned the power distribution equipment, while Hitachi Energy delivered the power conversion technology.

Battery storage plays a key role in Japan’s 2050 carbon neutrality goal, addressing the variability of solar and wind generation. The Matsuyama BESS aims to maximise renewable use while strengthening local grid resilience.

Situated in a region with expanding renewable capacity, the facility is expected to deliver reliable electricity for decades. Hitachi plans to continue advancing BESS technology to support Japan’s renewable growth and long-term grid stability.
