Thailand, Bangkok: Huawei Technologies (Thailand) and the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) have introduced a next-generation intelligent substation solution at a launch event in Bangkok. The solution aims to support digital and intelligent upgrades across Thailand’s substations, enhancing grid reliability and operational efficiency.
William Zhang, President of Enterprise Business at Huawei Thailand, said the solution addresses trends such as renewable energy integration, grid flexibility, interactive power consumption, and coordinated energy storage. The system supports intelligent inspection and maintenance using optical-visual linkage and AI-based predictive maintenance, improving safety and efficiency.
Pantong Thinsatit, Assistant Governor (Grid Operation – Network Operation) at PEA, highlighted the benefits of digital transformation for high-quality power system development. PEA has already deployed intelligent unmanned systems in 467 substations, integrating smart poles, battery monitoring, license plate recognition, and emergency systems. These upgrades aim to reduce manpower requirements and support full automation.
Traditional substations often face challenges including limited security monitoring, high manual inspection workloads, and complex wiring causing data delays. Huawei’s solution addresses these through three core capabilities:
- Perimeter Protection: Optical fibre sensing and AI algorithms provide 24/7 monitoring and early warning of intrusions.
- Intelligent Inspection: AI-driven inspection systems monitor equipment such as meters and transformers, enabling remote real-time fault detection and alerting.
- Full Connectivity: Intra-station optical fibre networks reduce deployment time and cost while supporting multi-service operations.
The collaboration between Huawei and PEA represents a key step in technological innovation and ecosystem cooperation. Both organisations aim to continue advancing digital and intelligent transformation across Thailand’s electric power sector.
