Namibia: ACTOM has announced the successful commissioning of the Sekelduin 132/66/33 kV digital substation near Swakopmund, Namibia.

The project, officially opened by NamPower, was delivered at a cost of $24 M (N$394 M) and is designed to strengthen the electricity network in the Erongo region while supporting future demand growth.

According to ACTOM, the facility uses digital substation technologies including process bus and station bus systems aligned with the IEC 61850 standard for substation automation. The project also incorporates fibre-optic communication and hybrid AIS/GIS switchgear to enable real-time monitoring, remote operation and predictive maintenance.

The digital infrastructure is designed to support future AI and machine learning applications, helping operators improve system monitoring and operational efficiency. ACTOM stated that operators can now manage switching remotely, reducing the need for physical intervention and improving safety.

The compact indoor AIS/GIS and metal-enclosed GIS design was selected to optimise space and protect equipment from harsh desert and coastal environmental conditions.

ACTOM noted that the project demonstrates the application of international engineering standards and advanced digital systems within African energy infrastructure projects. The company added that the Sekelduin substation provides a model for future cyber-secure and scalable digital substations across the continent.

The new substation now serves as an important supply point for Namibia’s coastal electricity network.
