USA, Massachusetts: National Grid is set to rebuild its A1/B2 transmission corridor in a $470 M infrastructure programme aimed at modernising one of New England’s oldest power lines and improving long-term system reliability.

The 75-km (47-mi) route runs through Worcester and Franklin counties and connects with upgraded networks extending into New Hampshire and Vermont. The project will replace more than 570 structures, some of which date back to 1909, marking a major overhaul of ageing transmission infrastructure.

Historically, the A1/B2 line carried Vermont hydropower into northern Massachusetts and supported early regional development, including water supply infrastructure linked to the Quabbin and Wachusett reservoirs. Today, however, National Grid says the system is no longer suited to modern operating conditions.

According to the utility, the existing configuration is highly vulnerable to outages caused by storms, vegetation and other environmental factors. Its design also restricts access for modern maintenance equipment and limits capacity to meet rising electricity demand.

ISO New England forecasts regional electricity demand to increase by around 11 % by the mid-2030s, driven by electrification of heating, transport and growing system load.

The upgraded corridor will initially operate at 69 kV, with future capability to support 115 kV expansion. Completion is expected by late 2030.

National Grid said the project will reduce outage frequency, improve restoration times and enable integration of new customer demand and distributed energy resources across the region.
