UK: National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) and Space Solar have launched an ambitious Wireless Power Transmission project to explore the future of electricity distribution without wires. The initiative will examine whether cutting-edge ground-based wireless technology could supplement or even replace traditional overhead lines and underground cables, potentially improving service for customers.

The project aims to enhance network resilience, enable faster connections, and provide electricity more flexibly, particularly in remote areas. It could also support offshore renewable energy, offering a simpler and more cost-effective way to transmit power across the UK’s National Landscapes.

With electricity demand expected to double by 2050, requiring four times more renewable energy capacity, innovation in power transmission is becoming essential. NGED and Space Solar will test whether wireless systems can help during emergencies, such as storms, while reducing delays in connecting new clean energy projects.

The project is funded by the Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF), managed by Ofgem in partnership with Innovate UK, following the Energy Networks Innovation Taskforce’s recommendations for a more collaborative approach to network innovation.

Tim Polack, NGED’s Director of Strategy and Transformation, said: “Innovation is key to a cleaner energy future. Wireless power transmission could transform the grid, providing resilience, cost savings, and faster connections for customers.”

Sam Adlen, Co-CEO of Space Solar, added: “Wireless technology has revolutionised communications. Now, similar advances could help meet growing electricity needs and integrate renewables faster.”

Financial benefits could include lower system costs, shorter connection times, reduced constraint payments, and quicker access to clean, affordable energy. By speeding renewable connections and reducing bottlenecks, wireless transmission could ultimately help prevent energy bill increases for consumers.
