Germany, North Sea: Nordseecluster A has fed first electricity into the German grid, marking a major milestone for the offshore wind project.

Nordseecluster is a joint project between RWE and Norges Bank Investment Management. RWE is responsible for construction and operations throughout the project’s lifecycle.

Once fully completed, the wider Nordseecluster development will deliver 1.6 GW of renewable energy, supporting Germany’s net-zero ambitions and strengthening energy security.

Nordseecluster A has a total capacity of 660 MW and comprises 44 wind turbines and two offshore substations. Following the first power milestone, the project is expected to be fully connected to the grid by 2027, with turbine installation, testing and commissioning continuing gradually.

“The Nordseecluster, RWE’s largest offshore wind project currently under construction, is progressing exactly as planned, with the first turbine now generating electricity and feeding power into the German grid,” said Sven Utermöhlen, CEO of RWE Offshore Wind.

The next phase, Nordseecluster B, will add a further 900 MW of capacity. Turbine installation is expected to begin next year, with commercial operations scheduled to start in 2029.

The project highlights the role of offshore substations and grid connection infrastructure in integrating large-scale renewable energy into Europe’s power systems.
