The Philippines: Hitachi Energy has successfully delivered the first IEC 61850 Substation Automation System in the Philippines, installed at Meralco’s Amadeo 230 / 115 kV GIS substation. The project marks a key milestone in Meralco’s long-term plan to develop a smarter, safer, and easier-to-maintain power network through digital substations.
The solution, based on Relion® 670 bay control and protection IEDs, meets full compliance with the IEC 61850 international standard. Hitachi Energy was responsible for the overall technical concept, system design, configuration, and testing. Customer training was also carried out at its facilities in Baden, Switzerland.
Locally, Hitachi Energy Philippines manufactured the control and protection panels, and managed installation, commissioning, and site acceptance testing.
The scope of supply included a redundant substation automation system SAS 650, Relion® 670 devices, and protection IEDs from both Hitachi Energy and third parties.
Meralco benefits from modern, future-proof technology that not only meets its current technical needs but also reduces operational and maintenance costs. The digital platform supports life cycle management and provides a foundation for the company’s broader smart grid ambitions.
The Amadeo project shows how global expertise combined with local engineering support can deliver world-class energy infrastructure, enhancing reliability and preparing the Philippines for the energy challenges ahead.
