Austria: SPIE has secured a contract from Netz Niederösterreich GmbH to expand and build three substations in Lower Austria, strengthening the region’s power grid and supporting the growing use of renewable energy.
The projects are located in Sarasdorf, Neusiedl an der Zaya and Gföhl, and are part of Netz Niederösterreich’s long-term modernisation plan. This programme includes the new construction or replacement of around 55 substations by 2034. Work on the three sites started in 2025 and is due to be completed in 2028.
At the Sarasdorf substation, the existing 110 / 30 kV facility is being expanded while remaining in operation. Once finished, it will feature a 110 kV outdoor switchgear with 17 bays, a 30 kV switchgear building with 10 bays, new transformers and related infrastructure. SPIE is handling engineering, equipment supply, installation, commissioning, documentation and the connection to the Austrian Power Grid.
In Neusiedl an der Zaya, SPIE is carrying out its third expansion of the 110 kV switchgear since 2020. The project includes 13 new bays, a 30 kV switchgear building with 28 bays, four transformers and associated infrastructure, all delivered during ongoing operations.
In Gföhl, a new 110 / 20 kV substation is being built to allow large photovoltaic systems in the area to feed power into the grid without limits. The facility will also improve security of supply.
SPIE said its long-standing experience with Netz Niederösterreich is key to delivering these complex projects safely and efficiently.
