Substation operators continue to face significant operational and safety risks as power systems become more complex and heavily loaded. Industry experts warn that many serious incidents are still linked to human error, communication failures and pressure during switching and restoration work.
Among the most common problems are bypassing mechanical and electrical interlocks, incorrect grounding practices, and failure to properly verify that equipment is de-energised before maintenance begins. Operators are also being cautioned against relying solely on SCADA systems without physical inspection of switchgear and substation equipment.
The industry is also seeing growing concern over arc flash risks and unsafe working practices, including failure to respect safety boundaries and incorrect use of personal protective equipment. Experts stress that even experienced personnel can become complacent in familiar environments, increasing operational danger.
Miscommunication during switching operations remains another major challenge, particularly during emergency restoration work when pressure to restore supply quickly can lead to procedural mistakes. Utilities are increasingly promoting structured communication methods and stricter operational discipline to reduce the risk of switching errors and accidental energisation.
At the same time, modern substations are generating larger volumes of relay and diagnostic data, making correct interpretation of alarms and protection signals more important than ever. Incorrect handling of relay targets or alarms can result in severe equipment damage and wider grid instability.
Utilities are therefore placing greater focus on training, safety procedures and human performance as essential elements of reliable substation operation.
