Switzerland, Zurich: Hitachi Energy and Larsen & Toubro (L&T) have received awards for Nederwiek3 and LanWin5, two offshore HVDC transmission links under their framework agreement with TenneT.
Each project will transmit 2 GW of renewable electricity from the North Sea to shore, bringing a combined 4 GW of clean power to the grids of the Netherlands and Germany. The capacity is equivalent to the electricity needs of around 4 million households.
Nederwiek3 will connect to an onshore converter station in Geertruidenberg, in the south of the Netherlands. LanWin5 will deliver offshore wind power to Lower Saxony in Germany.
The projects form part of TenneT’s 2 GW Program, which is designed to accelerate offshore wind integration and strengthen Europe’s high-voltage transmission infrastructure.
Hitachi Energy and L&T are already working together on Nederwiek1 and IJmuiden Ver Alpha. The latest awards extend their cooperation on next-generation HVDC grid connection infrastructure.
The projects are also designed with future interconnections in mind. Nederwiek3 is expected to support future integration with the British grid through the LionLink interconnector, currently under development.
According to Hitachi Energy, the links reflect the move from individual offshore connections towards a more interconnected, flexible and resilient grid architecture.
