Japan, Kawasaki: Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation and GE Vernova have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on a combined solution that integrates gas turbine and carbon capture technologies to reduce emissions from gas-fired power plants in Japan and other parts of Asia.
The agreement builds on a 40-year partnership between the two companies and aligns with Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) initiative to promote carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) in the power sector. The signing was attended by METI’s Director-General for Energy and Environmental Policy, Shinichi Kihara.
Under the MoU, the partners will combine GE Vernova’s Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system with Toshiba’s proprietary CO₂ capture technology for use in Gas Turbine Combined Cycle (GTCC) plants. Feasibility studies with Japanese utility companies have already demonstrated the potential to reduce emissions while maintaining power generation efficiency.
Toshiba Vice President Takehiko Matsushita said the collaboration supports global efforts to decarbonise thermal power while maintaining stable electricity supply. GE Vernova’s Jeremee Wetherby noted that integrating EGR with Toshiba’s steam systems can reduce the energy penalty associated with CO₂ capture.
The joint solution is designed to lower capital and operational costs, improve system performance, and enable flexible integration with existing power infrastructure, supporting Asia’s broader energy transition goals.
