Australia, New South Wales: New South Wales is moving closer to a cleaner and more affordable energy future, with major upgrades to the state’s transmission network underway to support its first Renewable Energy Zone (REZ).

Transgrid, Australia’s largest transmission company, has been engaged by the NSW Government to build critical infrastructure linking the Central-West Orana REZ to the main electricity grid. In partnership with Zinfra, Transgrid will carry out the design and construction of the new transmission systems, paving the way for solar and wind energy to be delivered efficiently across the state.

The project includes:

  • A 1.5 km, 330 kV transmission line between Bayswater and Liddell in the Hunter region,
  • An 8 km, 330 kV line between Mount Piper and Wallerawang in the Central Tablelands, and
  • Cut-in works at the new 500 kV Barigan Creek Switching Station in Wollar.

These enhancements will increase the power flow from the REZ and reinforce the reliability of NSW’s energy network.

Transgrid CEO Brett Redman emphasized the importance of the project in meeting the state’s energy transition goals, while Zinfra Managing Director Peter Iancov highlighted the benefits for local communities, including job creation and regional business opportunities.

The Mount Piper–Wallerawang upgrade has been declared Critical State Significant Infrastructure, underscoring its role in securing NSW’s energy future.
