Tanzania, Dar es Salaam: The Mbagala substation officially began operations on 13 May, delivering 50 MW of electricity in a major step toward strengthening the local power supply. According to Tanesco, this marks a critical milestone in ongoing national efforts to stabilize and modernize Tanzania’s electrical grid.

Tanesco Managing Director Lazaro Twange noted that the project’s first phase, currently 70 % complete, already meets immediate energy demands. The full substation upgrade, launched in July 2022 with an investment of $6.4 M, will ultimately offer 170 MVA of transformation capacity once the second phase adds another 120 MW.

“The demand for electricity in Mbagala is growing. We are committed to sustainable solutions and reliable supply,” said Twange, emphasizing customer support through a newly established service center to handle complaints and resolve issues.

Temeke District Commissioner Sixtus Mapunda praised the project’s early launch, which came ahead of the expected June testing timeline. He and Charambe Ward Councillor Twahi Shabani both expressed optimism that the development will bring an end to frequent outages.

Project Manager Bernard Maiya added that the upgraded infrastructure is expected to significantly reduce power interruptions and improve service reliability in the area.
