Situated over 130 km off the Yorkshire coast, Dogger Bank will eventually generate enough clean electricity to power six million UK homes. ABB supplied the complete electrical infrastructure for the C-phase substation, working alongside contractor Aibel—an ongoing partnership since the contract’s inception in 2019.
The substation package features a comprehensive suite of systems: onboard control architectures, operational technology (OT) cybersecurity, IT systems, condition-monitoring tools, telecommunications, low-voltage power distribution, and bus ducts. Combining advanced digital solutions with rugged engineering, these systems are designed for reliable remote operation and predictive maintenance, reducing the need for offshore staff and extending equipment lifespan.
The primary role of the offshore substation is to gather alternating‑current power generated by the wind turbines, convert it into direct current, and transmit it to an onshore terminal. Once ashore, the power is converted back to alternating current and integrated into the national grid.
ABB has been a key player in offshore wind electrification for over forty years. Its components are used in more than 40 000 wind turbines globally. The company is supporting 14 offshore wind projects worldwide, accounting for around 20 GW of capacity, including nine in the UK alone—representing nearly 12 GW of offshore wind demand.
This achievement highlights the critical role that automation, digitalisation and grid integration play in enabling large-scale renewable energy. By offering a central “gateway” for wind energy, ABB’s solutions ensure safe, efficient and scalable systems. Projects like Dogger Bank also exemplify how intelligent engineering can underpin the transition to clean energy while boosting energy security and independence.
Through its involvement in Dogger Bank C, ABB demonstrates its commitment to supporting the energy transition with robust, future-proof technology—and further cements its position as a leader in delivering reliable offshore wind infrastructure.
