USA: US electric utilities are projected to spend more than $1.1 T on power grid infrastructure over the next five years, according to new data from the Edison Electric Institute (EEI). Spending in 2025 alone is expected to reach $208 B, reflecting the scale of investment needed to meet accelerating energy demand from artificial intelligence, data centres, and nationwide electrification.
By comparison, investor-owned utilities invested $765 B in grid upgrades and new assets during the previous five-year period ending in 2024. The new investment cycle marks a sharp escalation in capital expenditure to reinforce reliability, expand transmission, and integrate renewable energy capacity.
Industry experts warn that the rapid rise in electricity demand is placing unprecedented strain on the US grid. “The escalating energy crisis in the United States is poised to serve as a constraining factor across various industries,” said David Weeks, supply chain industry practice lead at Moody’s. “Companies must consider power-grid limitations and permitting delays when planning their supply chains,” Weeks concluded.
The upcoming investments will support the modernisation of transmission and distribution systems, addressing capacity constraints while improving resilience against extreme weather events and growing digitalisation needs.
