USA, Washington: The Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) has unveiled plans for a new transmission line and substation to support the growing electricity needs of the Tri-Cities area. The proposal includes a 29 km (18 mi) 115 kV line, and a 500 kV substation aimed at reinforcing the regional grid and ensuring long-term power reliability.

Part of the South of Tri-Cities Reinforcement Project, the proposed substation would be located at Weber Canyon in the Horse Heaven Hills, near Benton City, along the existing Ashe–Marion 230 kV line. From there, the new line would run east, taking one of two potential routes through Badger Canyon to connect with existing substations at Leslie Road and Badger Canyon.

According to Jeff Cook, BPA’s acting vice president for transmission engineering, the project will help utilities meet growing energy demand, improve system reliability, and provide capacity for new and existing customers.

The initiative is part of a broader BPA strategy, which includes four major transmission upgrades in the region. These improvements aim to enhance short-term grid flexibility, support future generations, and accommodate new electrical loads.

To engage the public, BPA will host a community meeting on June 4 to explain the project timeline, purpose, and environmental assessment now open for review.
