Switzerland / Brazil: Eletrobras has renewed its long-term service agreement with Hitachi Energy for the Rio Madeira HVDC system, one of the world’s longest transmission links. The 2,375 km system has been in operation for over ten years, delivering 3.15 GW of electricity from the Amazon basin to power approximately 45 million people.
The service partnership builds on a decade of collaboration, during which Hitachi Energy has provided technical support through its EnCompass™ framework. The renewed contract includes a suite of digital tools that offer real-time system monitoring and enhanced cybersecurity measures to help protect this critical infrastructure.
Hitachi Energy specialists have continuously adapted services to the Brazilian grid’s changing needs, factoring in seasonal load shifts and system demands. This extension supports the ongoing modernization of the Rio Madeira link, with a focus on system reliability, safety, and operational continuity.
The project is equipped with a MACH™ control and protection platform, which functions as the central control unit of the HVDC system, enabling advanced monitoring and diagnostics. The extended scope of service now includes cyber-resilience tools designed to meet growing concerns around digital threats to power infrastructure.
By continuing this collaboration, both Eletrobras and Hitachi Energy aim to maintain high service quality and ensure the system’s long-term role in supporting Brazil’s clean energy objectives.
